Temptation Won’t Overwhelm You

March 29, 2022 Kathy Shaull

The world is filled with temptation.

When temptation stares you in the face

It’s no secret that I have a sweet tooth. I don’t dare walk down the candy aisle at the store. And with the cakes beside the deli and fresh fruit in my store, temptation is right in front of me.

My new job also puts temptation front and center. When I took over as (part-time) church administrator, it was the glass bowl on my desk that I’m to keep filled with candy. And I’m tempted to indulge – even if I brought a piece of fruit from home for a snack.

Don’t let temptation surprise you

In today’s Spiritual Thought Twist, we’re looking at 1 Cor. 10:13 – You are tempted in the same way that everyone else is tempted. BUT God can be trusted not to let you be tempted too much, and He will show you how to escape from your temptations.

So we shouldn’t be surprised when temptation comes our way. Christians and non-believers alike face down some form of temptation daily. Knowing Christ doesn’t exempt us.

Trust God

BUT God can be trusted. Just stop and rest in that promise for a second.

God     Can     Be     Trusted!

God – Creator of the Universe, and He is so steadfast and true that we should realize temptation won’t do us in. We just need to remember He’s with us.

CAN BE – notice that this verb choice leaves the decision up to us. God is always trust-worthy, but we may not always rely on Him for the 2 things mentioned at the end of the verse:

2 Ways out of temptation

  1. God won’t let you be tempted too much –  When we fight against temptation, we rely on God. It strengthens our faith. While it may not be simple or easy, resisting does help you grow.
  2. He will provide an escape route – God always gives you a way out of temptation. Whether it’s a shopping route around the cakes and cookies or the tissue box strategically placed to hide the candy bowl from view. It may take some creativity, and it will always take a heart that is prepared to listen and hear God’s plan.

So what if we have to battle against temptation? We have God on our side. And He’s got a temptation limit and escape route for us!

PRAYER – USING 4 ASPECTS OF PRAYER

Adore – Precious Father, You watch over us and our daily lives. You see the struggles we have and provide limits and escape routes.
Admit – Abba, sometimes I bend into temptation and buy the cookies or eat the candy. My body is Your temple. Help me do better.
Ask – We ask that You make us strong in the face of temptation. That Your voice be clearer in those moments so we can find our way out to safer ground.
Acknowledge – Thank You, Father, for the limits You put on our struggles. And for helping us grow by relying on You in those hard times. We know You will always be there. That is the blessing.

THANKS FOR STOPPING BY TODAY. Why not pop over to Instagram and tell me if you can walk down the candy aisle safely – or if something jumps into your cart…
