Fall reminds me of harvest.
I guess growing up in a rural Oklahoma community makes me spend more time thinking about farmers than say… a city gal would. And cooler weather and turning leaves make me think of harvest. So it’s the perfect time for today’s Thought Twist.
A great harvest
Today’s verse is from Jesus Himself, “The harvest is plentiful…” (Matt 9:37). What a great statement!
No, Christ isn’t talking about wheat or some other crop. He’s not telling us that prices are about to drop because the crops are so bountiful. He’s talking about souls. He needed His disciples (and us) to be aware that so many people NEED Him. Their souls are lost, but they are ready to hear the Good News that He has for them. How exciting, right?
Missing harvest workers
However, Jesus’ next words are chilling: “BUT the laborers are few.” Did you get that? There is an abundance of souls who need Jesus, BUT not enough people to tell them about Christ.
So many Christians act like telling someone about Jesus isn’t their responsibility – as if they need a special calling or invitation to share what God is doing in their lives.
That’s just wrong!
We must always be ready to give testimony about our relationship with Jesus – to ask someone if they have a personal relationship with Him, too.
The problem’s solution
If you aren’t sharing with others regularly, then the least you can do is be obedient to Christ’s command in the next verse: “Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.” (v38)
In other words, get on your knees and ask for others to get out there in your place.
Who knows, God may give YOU the opportunity to personally help with the harvest.
