Give Me More than Bread & Water

January 11, 2022 Kathy Shaull

I’ll take more than bread and water, please.

Where’s the bread?

Many people start the year with a diet, and that often means they cut out bread. While I AM trying to eat a more-healthy diet in 2022, my weight loss in December 2021 was not by choice.

A new doctor prescribed a new medication, and I spent 2 weeks where keeping anything down was a luxury. Fun Christmas for me… NOT.

Jesus wasn’t offering diet advice

In Matthew 4, Satan was tempting Christ in the wilderness. Jesus had fasted for 40 days, and Satan suggested He could turn the stones to bread and meet His physical desires. “Jesus answered, ‘It is written, Man shall not live by bread along, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'” Matt. 4:4

Why start with bread?

Our focus for 2022 is Spiritual Thought Twists, so why start with this verse? Two reasons: 1- Jesus Himself spoke these words; 2- it shows us where our focus needs to lie.

How to thrive

Christ was telling Satan that our priorities couldn’t be to feed our physical self. Instead, we MUST nurture our spiritual self. We must dwell in the Word of God, and not menus. Instead of earthly baked bread, we need the Bread of Life (John 6:35)! That is the way to thrive and grow.

How do we apply this?

We have to readjust our focus- less about the world or the physical and more and more about God. More time in the Word, making it a priority over any social media. And that hits way too close to home.

Prayer – using 4 Aspects of Prayer

Adore – Jesus, You are the Bread of Life – the One who makes our relationship with Father God possible. All things were created by You and for You. You, and You alone, can give us what we need to thrive and grow.
Admit – I don’t always reach for time with You first thing before I reach for my phone. Help me change that habit.
Ask – I ask for a clear focus on spiritual things and less on the temporary nonsense of this world.
Acknowledge – We thank You, Father and Lord Jesus, for the divine and inspired Word that You gave to us so that we can hear You speak even now.

Thanks for stopping by today. Why not drop me a note on Instagram and let me know how YOUR Christmas went?
