Spiritual Monsters Pop Up Frequently
It’s Halloween season again, but spiritual monsters don’t wait for the end of October to rear their ugly heads. The following monsters tend to show up whenever things start going well. Or when The Enemy is working overtime to toss roadblocks in your way. As Christians, we must prepare to fight these monsters.
Defeating them alone is impossible. But, fortunately, we are not in this battle alone. We need to arm ourselves with Scripture. God has given us the two-edged sword we need to battle on.
10 Spiritual Monsters and How to Defeat Them:
- Vampire – In the Christian walk, vampires are the thoughts that drain you dry. Desire for perfection. Comparison. Guilt. This is not what we should focus on. Philippians 4:8 says, “Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”
- Ghost – Ghosts are the unseen things that cause us fear. They are the terrifying “What if’s” that keep us up at night and gnaw at us in the day. Instead of dreading the unseen, we must reinforce our faith. Hebrews 11:1 says, “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”
- Tyrannosaurus Rex – This monstrous dinosaur is easily recognized by its giant head and tiny arms. This is the monster that many Christians face on a regular basis. It claims faith, but it is all mental/verbal. Its tiny arms make it impossible to do anything productive. Instead, these Christians walk around, roaring at the top of their lungs, but they accomplish nothing in the name of our Lord. James 2:20 says, “…faith apart from works is useless.”
- Frankenstein’s Monster – This monster is comprised of the bits and pieces of envy you’ve assembled as you’ve compared yourself and your spiritual walk to that of someone else. Instead, Jesus calls us to rely on Him. 1 Peter 1:13 says, “…set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”
- Cyclops – Often Christians have a singular way to look at things. We demand perfection of others, when we are incapable of it ourselves. We must follow Christ’s example to forgive. Hebrews 8:12 says, “…I will remember their sins no more.”
- Mummy – Many Christians fight this monster that makes them overly wrapped-up in themselves. Let us show affection and compassion for others. Leviticus 19:18 says, “…you shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
- Skeleton – This monster has little substance. This is the tendency of many to have only a framework of Christianity. Where is the meat? Without Bible study and consistent prayer, we are merely babies in our faith who can only process milk. Hebrews 5:13-14 say, “for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.”
- Phantom of the Opera – Some Christians are so desperate for love. For admiration. To belong. They will do anything to take control of their small world. They cower in dark corners. But a loving Father has hand-picked us to go out and change the world. The big world. 1 Peter 2:9 says, “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.”
- Werewolf – This insidious monster is one who hides their real self until a specific situation arises. In one moment – with one group – they are one person. But in another instant, they transform into something unrecognizable. Maybe they are trying to blend in. They could be unsure of who they are. Maybe revealing who they are deep inside terrifies them. God already knows who you really are. You aren’t fooling anyone. Lamentations 2:19 says, “pour out your heart like water before the presence of the Lord.”
- Zombie – This final monster is the one who needs the most help: the unsaved. Those who are dead inside for all eternity – unless we step up and share the Good News. We have the gift of life to share. Battle the spiritual zombies with the Father’s love and the Son’s sacrifice. If you are looking for a path to salvation, click here.
